Collection FSA (unaccessioned) General
Description Sheep branding iron. The brand are the letters JC. There are remnants of the fluid on the brand.
Branding of sheep was compulsory until about 1945. After the sheep were shorn the brand was pressed onto the side of the sheep. The fluid was a thick tar like substance and came in different colours. After about 1948 it became illegal to brand sheep owing to the difficulty of scouring it out of the wool.
