Description |
Sheep brand "Flix-o-pad automatic sheep brand". The branding fluid was put into the pad through the hole in the side. The pad was pressed onto the sheep after they were shorn. The brand is a box with a handle and pad. It is painted green and the brand is held on with four wing nuts. The brand is the letters JC. Branding of sheep was compulsory until about 1945. After the sheep were shorn the brand was pressed onto the side of the sheep. The fluid was a thick tar like substance and came in different colours. After about 1948 it became illegal to brand sheep owing to the difficulty of scouring it out of the wool. This brand was used on the Flaxbourne Station and donated by Cecily and Robin Petre. |
