Description |
Newbury Russley stationary engine. No model or serial number. Used to drive the winch on the ship, Echo. Donated by H.S. (Bert) Eckford in October 1979. Owned by Marlborough Vintage Farm Machinery Society Inc.
Bert Eckford says, in his book "History of the Eckford Shipping Co. and Blenheim River Traders 1881-1965", published 1995, on page 50, "Her (Echo) winch motor for many years was a signle-cylinder petrol engine with a seven-inch piston and a three-foot heavy flywheel driving a drum for the cargo hook wire through a friction clutch. It was a type of winch which needed experience to handle."
