Description Survey chain of links each six inches long with a D handle at each end and brass tags at intervals along the chain. Manufactured by J.C. Chesterfield, Cheshire.

This surveyors chain used by Edward Fairhall when he worked for Joseph Ward and Cyrus Goulter when they surveyed the Wairau Valley.

From the book "Pages from the Past" pages 199-200: After purchase put a fresh survey (5 pence per acre) contract to W. Budge who employed Ward, Goulter and Edwards as surveyors with McDonald, Edwards, Garrity, Griffiths, Ford, Taylor and Fairhall as chainmen.
