Description Black and white photograph showing a steam powered whale chaser boat with a harpooner having just made a kill.

Caption December 2009:
A whale chaser with a new catch. The harpooner appears to be preparing to dart in a hand bomb-lance which will kill the animal. Then if it was in danger of sinking air would be pumped into the carcass. In 1910, whaling stepped up a level with the introduction of steam-powered chaser boats. The most successful of these operations was in Tory Channel. Each season, 100-200 Humpback Whales, caught in Cook Strait, were processed.
Year range to 1964
