The Relief of Mafeking in South Africa, 23 May, 1900. The Imperial troops won this second siege just a month after Ladysmith. Patriotism has been aroused to quite a degree. A Marlborough detachment was assisting Britain, on the first occasion that New Zealanders fought with Britain overseas. The celebrations happened in Market Place. The word Mafeking on the Post Office says it all. Banners, and flags, fly in the northerly breeze. The seating benches supplied by the Blenheim Borough Council hint at coming speeches, and entertainment. It looks as if the procession, led by a traction engine, is headed for Market Place. 2009.067.0037
