Description
Black and white photograph of an early mower used for cropping. The Editor (below) says, "New machines hold an important place in the farming calendar for a lucky few. Quite early on farmers quickly realised how the burden of long hours could be eased. Seen here is a very early mower and cereal reaper. Drawn by one horse it cut quite slowly. Cereal stalks fell on to the sloping platform from which they were regularly pulled together with a special rake wielded by a worker walking behind, and then tied into a sheaf. Henry Redwood, Senior, imported this machine in 1855 and used it on his Nelson property. It then went through various hands until rebuilt by the Marlborough Vintage Farm Machinery at Brayshaw Museum Park. It appears here on show at the 1959 Marlborough Vintage Farm Machinery display at Fairhall." This photograph is used on page 155 in the book, "Click - A Captured Moment. Marlborough's Early Heritage", Published by Marlborough Historical Society 2005, Editor and compiling by Lloyd Kerr. Date copy made is unknown. A scan of this photograph will be used in the Changing European History Gallery 2 display in commemoration of the Marlborough Provincial 150th anniversary on 1 November 2009. ............................................................................................................................................................................... Caption 30 Faster and better than the traditional scythe or sickle. This is a very early mower and cereal reaper. Henry Redwood Senior imported it in 1855, and used it on his Nelson land before it came to Marlborough. Drawn by a single horse, the severed cereal stalks fell on to a sloping platform from where they were pulled together with a special rake wielded by a worker walking behind. Finally the worker tied the raked stalks into a sheaf. This pioneer harvesting machine was called the back-delivery reaper. 2009.067.0063
