Description Photograph of John Cawte, hand coloured on glass. Oval portrait with Maroon mount with a gold edge. Ornate gilt frame. John Cawte was the Picton gaoler. Has 1993/116 on the back.

Label for Pioneer Portraits exhibit 2011:
John Cawte, police officer, arrived in Nelson in 1841 on the ship Whitby. He became Governor of the Picton gaol in 1861.
