Description Page 5 of 27: Three views of Lower High Street taken from the river. Plus a small card with greenery glued to the front, "Wild flowers from Cromwell", Mr. Furness says.

1. This is a copy of a William Collie photograph taken in 1872. It was taken from the Alfred Street bridge built in 1861. The first bridge over the Omaka river at the lower end of High Street was a footbridge completed by 19 Feb. 1873 [Hale: v.2, page 78]. The photograph shows the steamer, Lyttelton, tied up at Fells wharf, in front of Fells warehouse and store, and on the other side of the river is Symons Wharf on Symons Quay at the lower end of High Street. The bridge at the back of the picture goes over Lock-up Creek, so called because of its proximity to the jail. The big building in the distance looks like a livery stable, with gates across the large, high doorway. It may be the Public Livery Stables which were near the Wairau Theatre in Lower High Street and run by Thomas Hodgson, according to an advert in 1872.

2. Undated photograph of the Lower High Street bridge taken from the Alfred Street bridge, with a horse and cart coming off the Sinclair Street end. The livery stables have gone and the buildings in the background are probably near Main Street. The river is very overgrown.

3. An undated, possibly 1960s, coloured postcard of the same view as number 2. The Lower High Street bridge, taken from the Alfred Street bridge. A car crosses the bridge, heading for Sinclair Street. The tall tower is beside the Fire Station, which is the big concrete building. Phoenix palms line the street above the river bank and the river has been tidied up, with neat lawns and flowerbeds.
