Collection Akersten Photograph Album 1
Photographer Akersten, James Raglan
Description Page 19 of 36: Sepia view of the D.C.D.Co. Battery & Site. Wakamarina. Protected [no date] Akersten photograph.

This battery is in the upper Wakamarina Valley owned by the Dominion Consolidated Deep Creek Company (D.C.D.C.). This was known as the Golden Bar after one of the claims that it worked. The quartz was brought down the tramline which is visible above the buildings. The Wakamarina River is at the very bottom of the photograph. The battery crushed for gold and scheelite (tungsten is the metal and this is used for hardening steel). Information from Norm Brayshaw, see catalogue record 0000.900.0629.

A scan of this photograph is to be used in the Changing European History Gallery 2 display in commemoration of the Marlborough Provincial 150th anniversary on 1 November 2009.

Caption 42
Golden Bar battery and settlement, Upper Wakamarina Valley. Through the trees, the sloping roof of the stamper battery shows up near the Wakamarina River. Respectable, permanent-looking, but quite small, the cottages house the battery, and mine, managers as well as tunnellers, water race men, and others. Three worked quartz levels occur high up the mountain at left, out of the picture. Wagons of ore came directly downhill on a cable way, pulling the empties uphill. The 25-stamper Golden Bar operated most years from 1881-1926, and gave really good returns from its gold-bearing crushed quartz, and later on its scheelite. No other quartz mine in Marlborough ever matched it. 0000.009.0001
