Description |
Navy/black shot silk skirt and bodice - dated as between 1850 and 1860s by Ferrymead Historic Costumes. Item returned to owner but reinstated to MHS 15/04/2003. Gown/skirt is on the left in all the images.
Two-piece woman's gown in dark navy shot silk. Both skirt and jacket have been redesigned/stitched but the original shaping can be seen in the back of the jacket and in the trim on the jacket and sleeves. Mrs. Bruce was given the outfit by her Aunt, Mrs. Gladys Laurie of Christchurch. Mrs. Laurie was an enthusiastic collector and Mrs. Bruce believes that the outfit didn't belong to the family but probably had been given to her aunt. Mrs. Bruce had been told that it was a wedding dress. Mrs. Bruce noted on the receipt form, "Skirt and Jacket dated as between 1850's and 60's by Ferrymede Historic Costumes". Notes by Pam Saunders.
