A kid glove stretcher.
There are only two glove stretchers in MHS records in PastPerfect as at 28 August 2008, the other one is catalogue record 2002.172.0003. Without more information it is difficult to know which one belongs in which donation, but as a Flaxbourne kid glove stretcher is identical to the Victorian wooden one in this image [pictured in the centre of the image], I am cataloguing that one here (Jenny Pierson 28 August 2008).
Large plain light wooden glove stretcher, Victorian. Rounded handles and metal spring fitting. There is a hole drilled on one handle. This glove stretcher is the top one in both images.
Wooden glove stretchers (information from Pam Saunders, Textile Manager): The narrow end of the stretcher is inserted in each finger of the glove and the handles then squeezed, stretching the material so that the owner's fingers could once again fit back into the glove. Gloves were made of kid, thread, silk, or washing leather and had no 'give' so they had to be stretched when new or just washed. The gloves weer worn skin tight. |
