Seagulls Offer Battle At Nesting Grounds. Seagulls provide "fighter cover" for their young as The Express photographer approaches their nesting ground upstream from the Wairau Bridge, near Renwick. It is unusual for the birds to nest so far inland and particularly so in view of the proximity of trucks, heavy machinery and men working on the new bridge. When the photographer neared the nesting area the seagulls launched determined low-level attacks in an attempt to drive him off. Two groups of chicks, totalling about 30, were near the water's edge, but were so well camouflaged that the camera could not pick them out.
