Waitohi Dairy Factory Success in London. At the London Dairy Show, the major exhibition of its kind in Britain, cheese entered by the Waitohi Co-operative Dairy Co. Tua Marina, won the reserve championship in the New Zealand class. The Bledisloe Cup for Commonwealth countries was awarded to New Zealand - cheese submitted by the Bidwell Co-operative Dairy Co. (Wairarapa) being first, with second place going to the Greytown-Wairarapa Co-Operative Dairy Co. The manager of the Waitohi factory, Mr. L. Gardiner, has had outstanding success with cheese at New Zealand shows, and this year was his first venture into the bigger company of the London Dairy Show. He has won the South Island points prize for the past two years, and the year previously was runner-up to Rai Valley. This year he won the managers' class, open to all the South Island. His first assistant, who, Mr. Gardiner says, is "one of the team" responsible for the success, is Mr. L.H. Knight, who has won the South Island championship for first assistants for the last two years. Mr. Gardiner has been manager at Waitohi for two terms. Appropriately enough, he received his introduction to dairy factory work at Waitohi, where he started as a boy of 16. In 1921 he went to the Blenheim Co-operative Dairy Factory and spent three years making butter, after which he returned to the Waitohi factory. That was in 1924, and he was promoted to manager in 1938, carrying on until 1946, when he retired. He came back to work as manager in 1953, and is still on the job. The success at London is described by the N.Z. Dairy Division as an outstanding one, as there is always plenty of competition, and only the top quality exhibits get past the selection panel.
