Bringing Power From The Far South. The project to bring power from the South Island grid system to Marlborough is an immense undertaking. Some idea of its size may be gained from the above photograph of the terminal sub-station of the 220,000 volt transmission from Islington (near Christchurch). The sub-station is located at Kikiwa, a few miles from Lake Rotoiti, and the buildings cover several acres. At Kikiwa the 220,000 volt line is to be stepped down to 110,000 for the Marlborough-Nelson area and to 66,000 volts for the West Coast. From Kikiwa the power for Marlborough will be transmitted along a special line, similar to that which is being constructed between Islington and Kikiwa, via Hanmer and the Wairau Gorge. This line will come down the Wairau Valley, a distance of some 60 miles, and already provision is being made for its construction. For the State Hydro-Electric Department employees who will construct the line, a camp is being erected near Hillersden, which is roughly the half-way point. This camp, part of which is pictured at right, will be completed within the next few weeks. It will accommodate 32 men in single-man huts, has a dining hall, ablution block, and an office and store. Special accommodation is provided for the cook.
