"Members of the Marlborough Old Folk and Pensioners Association want to build a two-rink bowling green and a miniature croquet lawn behind their clubrooms in High Street, but such a project requires finance - and the Association has not a great deal of money. Still, the oldsters are not overcome by the problem; they decided to plant the area in potatoes and earn the necessary cash with the crop. Here are shown members, whose age averages over 70, planting the three-tenths-of-an-acre plot yesterday. They bought a small quantity of the seed potatoes, the bulk being donated by local seed and produce stores. Manure was also donated. The Association hopes to dig three tons of potatoes when the crop matures". |
