Oval inkwell stand and glass inkwell- mounted callipers engraved "Edwin Fox 1892." A letter attached to the accession form explains the provenance. "28th April 1990. Dear Mr. Walker, Thank you for your letter of 20th April. My wife and I only returned from South Island on Thursday and to avoid any further delay in returning the form to you, I have duly signed. The inkwell actually came into my possession through a friend in England to whom the item was given by Savill's then Chairman, Lord Sanderson, and I acted as 'donor' for my friend, Mr. E.V. Stevenson, of Billericay, Essex, who suggested that the Musuem in Picton might like to have it. I therefore brought it back from England last November with that purpose in mind. I did earlier undertake to let Mr. Sextus know the background or story of the inkwell itself - if I could establish it myself. All I can repeat is that it lay originally on the desk of Savill's Managing Director, Mr. John Macmillan, in London, was then on Lord Sanderson's desk in Leadenhall Street, E.C.3. the Head Office of the Company. Its origin is a matter for speculation but it appears to be a gift from an engineer, perhpas an employee of the Refrigerating Co. or Shaw Savill, more likely the former to the latter in recognition of Savill's long ownership of Edwin Fox. Sorry not to be more helpful, unless anything more interesting emerges in the course of time. Although I have noted the conditions on the form, if at any time in the future the Society wishes to dispose of it, then there is an active Shaw Savill Society in England and a branch in New Zealand whose President is Mr. Warren Jones, an ex Director of the Company, resident in Wellington. With best wishes and congratulations on the wonderful work done and being done by your Society." Signed by Bryant but signature unreadable.
