Description |
Mid 19th century sailing ship depth sounder. J. White and Company, Glasgow, manufacturer. Made of oak and porcelain. In thick foggy weather this sounding machine was used to find changes in the water depth. With its thin wire it didn't impede the ship's speed and also meant soundings could be made without total retrieval from the seabed. This machine is typical of that used in the 19th century and well into the 20th. Once at a more shallow depth a lead line would be used. |
