Description |
Tobacco wad. Before the days of plug tobacco. The leaf was wrapped in calico and tightly bound to retain some moisture. When the user required some, the thick end was peeled back to reveal the leaf and the quantity was shaved off with a knife. Found by a worker approximately 60 years ago (c.1934) as the bulwarks were being stripped down. He in turn gave the item to Ernie Doig of Picton. Ernie's daugher, Anne Duncan, donated the wad to the Society in 1994.
