Description |
Said to be a Canadian bear trap, this piece of equipment was brought (along with at least two others) to New Zealand in 1842 by John Gibson who settled at Kaituna near Renwick. It is said that he brought them to New Zealand so as to protect his family from the natives.
The sign on the left-hand side in image 4 that looks like an " r " is Gibson's brand for marking all his equipment.
John Gibson was a very early settler in the Marlborough area.
Two similar traps are held in the Renwick Museum. |
