Description |
Asbestos hood for a Kitson & Chance of Birmingham, England mantle burner. Part of the Brothers Lighthouse collection. Donated by Marine Department, Picton. Single incandescent mantle burners replaced lamps in the towers of some lighthouses in the mid 1890s. The incandescent burner was fed by paraffin (kerosene) and compressed air, and consumed a pint and three quarters of paraffin per hour (information from the internet re Mumbles Lighthouse in Swansea, England, February 2010).
