STANLEY CLARENCE (Stan) HYNDMAN
Stan joined the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 9th Reinforcements, on 8 February 1916 and trained at Trentham. He was put into the Headquarters Staff in Stores and was promoted to Corporal, then two months later promoted again, to Quarter Master Sergeant.
In July he embarked from Wellington on the Ulimoroa [aka Ulimaroa] for Devonport, England and arrived at Sling Camp, Wiltshire in September 1916. One month later he embarked for the New Zealand Base Camp at Etaples, France.
As a Quarter Master Sergeant, Len was in charge of stores and supply and travelled around with Headquarters most of the time. He was sent to the field, the Western Front in Europe, in June 1918, where he was involved in the battles of the Somme, before going on leave to Paris in November 1918.
His brother, Percy, a gunner, was also fighting in the Somme in 1918, but Percy went on to fight in Flanders, Belgium before becoming ill with appendicitis and being sent back to the hospital at Sling Camp, England in May 1919. Some of the souvenirs that Stan acquired may have come from Percy's time in France and Flanders.
Both brothers survived the war and both enlisted for WW2. Stan was a Quarter Master Sergeant again and possibly an instructor, traveling to Wellington, Picton and Nelson, attending meetings with the Education Board, but remaining in New Zealand for the duration of the war.
In civilian life Stan was a bootmaker with his own shop in Market Street, Blenheim. His brother, Percy was a tailor. Their occupations may have contributed to Len's desire to acquire souvenirs during his time overseas.
