Description
Shark Jaw From the Marlborough Sounds Of a world total of eight shark orders, New Zealand has six. There are over 400 species of sharks and New Zealand is home to 112 of them. Sharks have existed for more than 400 million years and belong to the class of invertebrates known as Chondrichthyes. They differ from other fish in that their skeletons are made of cartilage (the same flexible material in human noses and ears), not bones. In Maori mythology, the demi-god Maui placed the shark Te Mangoroa in the sky, forming the Milky Way. Sharks are endangered, and increasing measures are being put in place for their conservation. 2013.113.0003
