Roycroft & I were looking after the packs at Café Belge, we had a quiet day. Wednesday 2 We had a good many in for packs. Thursday 3 We had a good many in for packs again today. Friday 4 A good many on the road up to the Battn left their packs. Saturday 5 We had it quiet. Sunday 6 We had it quiet again today. Monday 7 We had another quiet day. Tuesday 8 The Battn. Came from the halfway camp to Walkers camp, we loaded & sent the packs, blankets & hats to them. Wednesday 9 Adams & Roycroft went to Walkers camp, I stayed with the stores & shifted into a hut with H. Goffin the Postal Corporal. Thursday 10 I did a few odd jobs. Friday 11 Arthur came along to see me this morning. I did a few odd jobs. Saturday 12 I started to alter the shed that we had the packs in. Jock Barron helped me part of the day. Sunday 13 I did a little more to the shed, Jack helped me again. Monday 14 I did a bit more to the shed. Charlie Thomas & Jock helped me part of the day. Tuesday 15 It was too wet & windy to put the covers on the shed. Wednesday 16 It was still a bit rough but we managed to get the covers on the shed. Thursday 17 I finished fixing up the shed & stacked the bombs & ammunition in it. Friday 18 The Stores & transport changed places with the first Brigade, at ……….. I came down on a G.Y. waggon. Saturday 19 I gave a had to straighten up things at the new camp. Sunday 20 My Rheumatism was too bad for me to do much today. Monday 21 I did one or two small jobs about the stores; we are just across the road from Brigade & Battn Hdqrs Tuesday 22 It was wet & cold, my Rheumatism was bad. Sergt Turner advises my going to the Doctor again. Wednesday 23 It was wet & cold. I was very lame with the Rheumatism. Thursday 24 I got a stick & managed to hobble down to the bathes & had a wash. Friday 25 I went to the Doctor this morning, he gave my leg a massage & liniament & gave me some tablets. Saturday 26 I finished taking the tablets the doctor gave me yesterday. Sunday 27 I kept quiet all day as it was cold & the leg was very sore. Monday 28 The weather was warmer & my leg was a bit easier. Titch was getting ready to go on leave. I started to do the cooking. February 1918 Friday 15 Titch came back from leave this afternoon so I finished up at the cooking. Saturday 16 I was getting my new fixed up and did a few other odd jobs. Sunday 17 I went for a walk in to Poperhinge this afternoon with Mac Pherson & Marlow. Monday 18 I did one or two small jobs. Tuesday 19 I cleaned up all my gear & had a general look through my things. Wednesday 20 I cleaned up some of the tools, the Billhooks & reaping hooks. Thursday 21 I had a turn of Influenza & stayed in bed all day. Friday 22 I was in bed again most of the day. Saturday 23 I was knocking about but did not do much. Sunday 24 I went along & watched a Soccer match for a while this afternoon. Monday 25 I got word about ten this morning to go on leave to Paris, one of the Jigs & I went up to Cornwall camp then marched to Poperhinge tonight & waited for train. Tuesday 26 We left Poperhinge at 1 this morning came on to Calis then changed to train for Paris, got here about 3, stayed at Hotel D'Sena. Wednesday 27 I had a good walk around and enjoyed it all right, went with one Australian to the Alarubai theatre tonight. Thursday 28 I had a stroll round but my cold was bad & I did not feel up to much it started to snow this afternoon. March 1918 Friday 1 I had a good look around again today, the weather was changeable. Saturday 2 It was snowing off & on all day. I kept pretty quiet & did not go out much. Sunday 3 It was a cold miserable day, there was snow lying on the ground all day, but it was not very heavy. Monday 4 It snowed again. I stayed in the hotel most of the day. Tuesday 5 It did not snow today but there was snow lying about the streets all day. I had a look around again. Wednesday 6 It was a fine day. I went to the Y.M.C.A. the Army & Navy leave(sic) Club & a corner in Blighty. Left Paris for camp by the 11.40 train tonight. Thursday 7 Got to Calais a little before midday, left there about half past one, changed again at Hazebrouck, left there at half past four, got to Poperhinge about half past six & home about half past seven. Friday 8 We have all shifted over to the camp at Bathe Hd-Qrs. I made a bunk & we camped with the rest of the Pioneers. Saturday 9 I did one or two odd jobs about the camp & went to watch a football match. Sunday 10 I went to Church Parade this morning, did one or two odd jobs & wrote some letters. Monday 11 We were doing a few odd jobs around the camp then Roycroft & Cpl Rabbits went on …….. leave. Barry Reid came back from leave to M.R. Tuesday 12 Fred Brady came back from Paris leave, we washed the football clothes & did one or two other small jobs. Wednesday 13 We did a few odd jobs about the camp, watched a football match this afternoon. Thursday 14 We did a few ood jobs about the camp, it rained a good part of the day. Friday 15 We did a few odd jobs about the camp. Saturday 16 We had another fine day we did a few odd jobs. Hd Qrs played transport football transport won. Sunday 17 It was another quiet day we did not have a church parade, there was service in one of the huts tonight. Monday 18 We did a few odd jobs around the camp, Fritz was sending over a few shells. Barry Reid went to hospital yesterday. Tuesday 19 We did a few odd jobs, but it was too wet to do much. Fritz is still sending over a few big shells. Wednesday 20 We did a few odd jobs about the camp. Thursday 21 Jim Ross went to Blighty on leave, we did a few odd jobs. Friday 22 We went to a bath parade this morning. I did some work for the transport this afternoon. Saturday 23 We did a few odd jobs about the camp & one at the transport this afternoon. Sunday 24 We were about the camp all day. Monday 25 We were at odd jobs about the camp all day. Tuesday 26 We did a few odd jobs about the camp. Wednesday 27 We were warned for moving, so got ready and had inspections, Jim Ross, Fred Brady, Sgt Turner & I were warned to go as Pioneers. Thursday 28 We marched to Abule & took the train down to Petit Courvise stayed in the trucks all night. Friday 29 The companies marched off this morning. The four of us pioneers & two or three others waited for the lorries in charge of the blankets & stores. Saturday 30 We shifted a few miles again, and hitched tents it was very wet & muddy. Sunday 31 We did a little Pioneer work the morning, went & helped the transport to cart stakes & wire this afternoon. April 1918 Monday 1 We did a few odd jobs about the camp. Went & fixed up a shed as a Y.M.C.A. canteen. Tuesday 2 We did a few odd jobs about the camp. Wednesday 3 We did a few odd jobs about the camp. Fred Brady went away with the G.G. waggons & is to help at the stores for a while. Thursday 4 Jim & I did a few odd jobs, it did not rain much but is still dull & there is plenty of mud about this camp. Friday 5 Jim & I did a few odd jobs about the camp the weather is still dull & miserable. Saturday 6 We did a few odd jobs about the camp, Ward & Jock Barron came back & Brady came back to us. Sunday 7 We did not do much, it was showery, we were to have had church parade but it was too wet. Monday 8 We did a few odd jobs about the camp. Tuesday 9 We shifted our camp up on to the ridge. Wednesday 10 We were doing odd jobs around the camp. Thursday 11 We did a few odd jobs about the camp. Fri 12 We did a few odd jobs about the camp, it was a nice warm day. Saturday 13 We did a few odd jobs. Brady went to the dentists, it was dull & cold. Arthur was killed in action today. Sunday 14 Brady went to the dentist, I went to Bus with the G.G. waggons & it was dully & a very cold wind was blowing. Monday 15 We did one or two odd jobs about the camp this morning, started to make a small rifle butt this afternoon near the camp. Tuesday 16 We were at the rifle butt all day. Wednesday 17 We were at the rifle butt this morning, it was wet this afternoon. Thursday 18 We were at the rifle butt for a while till it got too wet. Friday 19 We were at the rifle butt for a while then I started to make some small targets. Jim Ross was on some other work, Fred Brady was at the butts all day. Saturday 20 We did a few odd jobs about the camp, I fixed up some latrine boxes for Cpl Rabbits. Sunday 21 We did one or two small jobs about the camp, went to Authie this evening for a bath. Monday 22 We did a few odd jobs about the camp. Tuesday 23 We did a few odd jobs about the camp & made pegs for a marquee for the Y.M.C.A. Wednesday 24 We made some uprights for the Y.M.C.A. Marquee, & other odd jobs. Thursday 25 We did a few odd jobs about the camp, we had an open air memorial service as it is Anzac Day. Friday 26 We did a few odd jobs. Saturday 27 We did a few odd jobs around the camp. Sunday 28 We started this afternoon to put up an enclosure round the guard tent. Monday 29 We finished the enclosure round the guard tent, except the gate. Tuesday 30 We did a few odd jobs about the camp, including a fence at the Y.M.C.A. Tuesday 21 We were working at the store. Wednesday 22 I was making lids for the latrines & other odd jobs, the others were at the stores putting up a bath house. Thursday 23 I fixed up the lids it came on very wet. The others were putting up a bath house. Friday 24 I put up a table in the O.C's tent & did one or two other odd jobs, the others were putting up a boottmakers shop. Saturday 25 I made stools for the O.C's tent & did one or two other odd jobs, the others were at the stores. Sunday 26 We had church parades this morning, the companies did not go out digging. Monday 27 We did a few odd jobs about the camp. Tuesday 28 We were all busy excavating under our tents. Wednesday 29 We were giving a hand to dig in the cook's tent. Thursday 30 We did a few odd jobs about the camp, started to put up an officer's mess-room. Friday 31 We did a few odd jobs about the camp, we started to put up a yesterday. June 1918 Saturday 1 We did a bit more to the officer's mess-room. Sunday 2 We did a little to the officer's mess-room this morning, did not work this afternoon. Monday 3 We did a little more to the officer's mess-room and I fixed the handles in some picks for C. Coy. Tuesday 4 I finished fixing up C. Coy's picks & did some for A. Coy. Wednesday 5 We were at the officer's mess-room, this morning, and started to fix up a limber for the transport this afternoon. Thursday 6 We did one or two odd jobs about the camp. Friday 7 We were down at the stores & transport. Saturday 8 We did a few odd jobs about the camp. Sunday 9 We had a church parade this morning. Monday 10 We did a few odd jobs about the camp. Tuesday 11 We did a few odd jobs about the camp. Wednesday 12 I was fixing up boards for the guards' packs, the others were working on the limber & cooker for the show. Thursday 13 I finished getting out the boards & then gave the rest a hand with the limber & the cooker. Friday 14 We were all working at the limber & cooker. Saturday 15 We were all working at the limber & cooker. Sunday 16 We all went to the Divisional show. I met a lot of old friends. Monday 17 We did a few odd jobs about the camp. Tuesday 18 We did a few odd jobs about the camp. I was fixing up another tent this afternoon. Wednesday 19 We did a few odd jobs & shifted into the other tent. Thursday 20 We did a few odd jobs. Friday 21 I & Fred Brady had a dose of Influenza stayed in bed. Saturday 22 I was in bed all day. Jim Ross was down with Influenza. Sunday 23 Jim Ross & Fred Brady went to the sports, I got up but had to lie down again with a bad back. Monday 24 I was in bed most of the day, back still bad. Tuesday 25 The Dr came to see me, & got my back painted with Iodine. Wednesday 26 I had my back painted again this morning. Thursday 27 I had my back painted again this morning, it is a bit better. Friday 28 My back is still stiff. I did not do any work. Saturday 29 Did no work as my back is still stiff. July 1918 Monday 1 Still lying around with a very stiff back. Tuesday 2 I saw the doctor this morning, he told me to have my back massaged every day. Wednesday 3 Back still stiff, had it massaged again. Thursday 4 Back still bad had it massaged, the cold wind that was blowing this morning seemed to make it worse. Friday 5 I was lying about most of the day. Saturday 6 I was lying around most of the day. Monday 8 Have not been able to work, back still bad. Tuesday 9 Back still bad Wednesday 10 Back still bad Thursday 11 Back still bad had a mustard plaster on it this afternoon. Friday 12 Did not work. Back not fit. Saturday 27 We did a few odd jobs. Monday 29 A camp of Townies shifted from near here, & we salvaged a good deal of stuff. Tuesday 30 I fixed up some shelving for our cook & one or two other odd jobs. Wednesday 31 We had to give up our tent, so made a bivvy, & started to build an orderly room. August 1918 Thursday 1 We were working at the new orderly room. Friday 2 We were working at the new orderly room. Saturday 3 We finished the orderly room & they shifted into it. Monday 5 We started to put up a hut for the C.O. Tuesday 6 We were working at the Major's hut. Wednesday 7 Jim Ross was getting ready for leave, the Sergt, Brady & I were working at the Major's hut. Thursday 8 The three of us were working at the Major's hut. Friday The three of us were working at the Major's hut. Saturday 10 The three of us were working at the Major's hut. Monday 12 I was getting ready to go on leave to U.K. to-morrow. Tuesday 13 There were eleven of us started off for Blighty this morning, we got as far as Bolong tonight. Wednesday 14 We had to wait around till mid-day for a boat got to London about 7 this evening. Thursday 15 We were about London all day. Friday 16 We were about London all day. I met Bob Stewart, we left London for Aberdeen tonight. Saturday 17 We arrived in Aberdeen about half past 8 this morning & put up at the Y.M.C.A. hostel. We went out to the Don & over the Ducks. Sunday 18 We had a look around the town & went down to the beach met two nice girls named Frazer. Went with them over the old Bridge of Balgownie & through old Aberdeen. Monday 19 We went up on to the tower of the Marischal college, took the girls to the theatre tonight. Tuesday 20 Bob went off up to Banf this morning. I was down at the beach & had a good look round with the girl tonight. Wednesday 21 Elsie Frazer & I went up to Baltic by train out to Balmoral castle by motor had a good look round that & got back again tonight. Thursday 22 Bob Stewart came back to Aberdeen last night but went onto Montrose this morning. I took the two Mils(written the old fashioned way) Frasers to the theatre tonight. Friday 23 I left Aberdeen this morning & came to Edinburgh. I was walking around the city all the afternoon. Saturday 24 I went up to the top of the Scott monument, then Bob Stewart & I took a bus to the Forth bridge, then we went through Edinburgh castle & afterwards I went through the Edinburgh Academy. Sunday 25 Bob Stewart & I were about together all the morning this afternoon I met Mary Macneil. We went through Holywood Basin then climbed the hill behind it, then after tea we went up Baltic hill. Monday 26 Bob Stewart & I left Edinburgh at 10 this morning got to London about 8 this evening. Tuesday 27 Bob Stewart & I were about London all day, we went to the Zoological gardens this afternoon. Wednesday 28 I left London for France this morning. Bob Stewart stays till tomorrow, we stayed in a camp at Boulogne tonight. Thursday 29 We came up by train, to Monticourt, got home about midnight. Friday 30 I was about the camp nearly everyone is going up to the line, the ….. said he would send me for a board but I ….. & got orders to go tomorrow & join 1st Auckland. Saturday 31 We left the camp at 9 am and marched in battle order up to the 1st Auckland transport lines, stayed there the night. September 1918 Sunday 1 We left about nine this morning, and got to the battle about one. I was put into the 3rd Auck company, just past Bapauree. Monday 2 We shifted our camp last night, Charlie Thompson, Mitch & I are camped together, we were on gass guard this morning we were out salvaging. Tuesday 3 We were about the bivvies most of the day. I went to the Dr, but only got my leg dry massaged. We shifted about 1½ miles towards the line tonight. Wednesday 4 We started off again this morning about seven, went about 1½ miles, laid around till evening then came back about ½ mile - dug in. Thursday 5 We stayed about four dugouts most of the day & went & saw the Dr again, have the Rheumatics in the back again. Friday 6 We got flooded out of our dugout last night so camped in the huts, we shifted away back & the R.B. took our place, we are in dug outs again. Saturday 7 We were about the dugouts all day, my back is still bad. I have been having it massaged twice a day & am taking medicine. Sunday 8 Most of the boys have been out on fatigues of some kind, it started to rain about midday. Monday 9 I went to the Dr again this morning, he did not examine me but gave me some tablets to take, I reckon I am getting worse as the weather gets colder. Tuesday 10 We started off for the line this afternoon, we went about 5 kilos & camped in huts where the Germans evidently stored ammunition. Wednesday 11 We started off again this evening & got into support trenches about midnight. Fritz was throwing over a fair amount of gass & high explosive, we had one man wounded. Thursday 12 Fritz did not give us much peace, we had one man killed three wounded & one shell shocked. Friday 13 Early this morning Fritz counter-attacked, the S.O.S. was sent up but got no response from the artillery. We stood to but he did not come far, he stopped & went back when he saw the S.O.S. sent up. Saturday 14 We came out from the line last night camped in some huts, we came on again to a camp below Bapauree most of the N.Z. divisions seem to be here. Sunday 15 We were about the camp all day, we had a very heavy storm last night & got most of our things wet & muddy. Monday 16 I went to the doctor this morning & got some more pills & massage. Tuesday 17 I went to the doctor & got some pills & massage but the back was very stiff & light duty. Wednesday 18 I went to the doctor and got some tablets. I saw doctor Eddie tonight, he advised me to go for a board. Thursday 19 I went to the doctor & asked him about a board, he gave me some more tablets & light duty. Friday 20 I went to the doctor he gave me some more tablets. Saturday 21 I went to the doctor I got some tablets, and light duty. Sunday 22 We went for a battn parade, and were back too late for church parade. Monday 23 I went to the doctor got some more tablets & light duty. Tuesday 24 I went to the doctor got some tablets & light duty. Wednesday 25 I went to the doctor got tablets & massaged & two days light duty. Thursday 26 I was pottering around the camp on light duty. Friday 27 I went to the doctor, he told me I would be getting word any day to report to the A.D.M.S. Saturday 28 We left camp for the front line by motor lorries, at 4 this morning, stayed most of the day in a trench & marched on again tonight to an assembly trench. Sunday 29 I tried all day to find the A.D.M.S., but was too sore to walk far. I slept in Frecourt. Monday 30 I got down to the Ent-Battn camp by motor lorries, and saw doctor Edie he gave me a chit to the 3rd field ambulance. I reported to the details camp, got my pack & back to the 3rd field ambulance. October 1918 Tuesday 1 I stayed in bed most of the day, my back was bad. I met several boys that I knew. Wednesday 2 The doctor came and marked me C.C.S. I went down with several others in a motor ambulance below Albert through Vaerescs. A hospital train pulled out to-night. Thursday 3 We hung about the C.C.S. camp all day, it is a very quiet place. Friday 4 We were about the C.C.S. all day. Saturday 5 We were at No 59 C.C.S. till after twelve, then we took motors to No 21 C.C.S. & entrained. Sunday 6 We got to Rouen early this morning. I was sent to N.6. General hospital. Monday 7 I hung around the hospital all day. The doctor marked my ticket to Truville. Tuesday 8 I have been around the hospital, at Rouen all day. Wednesday 9 We started off at about two oclock this morning, went to Le Harve & came over to Southampton on the Hormosa. Thursday 10 We were waiting at Southampton till after four got to No 2 N.Z. Hospital about 7 tonight. Friday 11 The doctor came round this morning, and gave me a good examination. I have to stay in bed, it rained a good part of the day. Saturday 12 In bed all day, it is a quiet place but is very pleasant. Sunday 13 It was a very nice day, we had the artillery band playing to us this afternoon. Monday 14 It was another quiet day. I had my back massaged. Tuesday 15 The sister came and gave me a massage, then later she put an electric battery on to my back & legs. Wednesday 16 I had my back massaged & afterwards had the electric battery on my back and knee. Thursday 17 I had my back massaged & afterwards had the electric battery on my back an knee. Friday 18 I had my back massaged & had the electric treatment afterwards, I went along to the massage room. Saturday 19 I went along to the room and had my back massaged & had the electric treatment again this morning. Sunday 20 It was a quiet day. I did not get any treatment. Monday 21 I went to the room & got massaged & the electric treatment & wrote a few letters after. Tuesday 22 I went to the room, got massaged & had the electric treatment. Wednesday 23 The doctor came and had a look at all of us, and told us we could all get up. I got massaged and treated. Thursday 24 We were all out of bed, it was pay day, I did not get treated. Friday 25 Thomas & I went for a walk, to the village of Weybridge. Saturday 26 Warren, Thomas and I went for a walk to Weybridge this afternoon. I bought a N.Z. badge broach yesterday. I left my watch to be mended. Sunday 27 Thomas and I went to Walton, for a walk this afternoon. Monday 28 Emery, Thomas and I went for a walk to Weybridge this afternoon. Tuesday 29 I went out to the Oatlands village this afternoon. Wednesday 30 We were warned to stand to out beds at 2 oclock, a freak doctor came round, he took Baumatyne's papers. Thursday 31 We were warned that the mail for N.Z. closes tomorrow, most of us were busy writing. I went to Oatlands village this afternoon. November 1918 Friday 1 Emery, Thomas & I went for a walk to Weybridge this afternoon. Saturday 2 Emery, Thomas, Fred & I went for a walk to Weybridge this afternoon. Sunday 3 It was a dull day & rained part of the day we did not stir out much all day. Monday 4 It was wet we did not go far away all day. Tuesday 5 Emery, Wallen(sic), Thomas & Fred went out Walton way I went to Weybridge. Wednesday 6 There was not much doing, we were all out this afternoon. Thursdayh 7 Wallen(sic) & I went to Weybridge this afternoon. Friday 8 Emery, Wallen(sic) & I went to the Mt. Felix hospital this afternoon. Warren & I were marked for Hornchurch. Saturday 9 Warren and I joined in with about 30 others and got to Hornchurch about midday. Sunday 10 We did very little. I met two or three old friends. I was put into No 3 Coy. Monday 11 I went to the doctor & was marked B.6., later we got word that Germany had signed the Armistice terms & we had a general holiday. Tuesday 12 I went to the doctor with the Heabies, he sent me to the isolation hut, where I met Cpl. Giles. Wednesday 13 I got bathed and a rub with sulphur mixture. The doctor came round he sent three out & 3 more came in. Thursday 14 I got a bath & a rub with sulphur ointment. Giles and two others went out. Friday 15 I got a bath with rub with sulphur again, the doctor came round but did not send anyone out. Saturday 16 I got a bath and a rub with ointment the doctor did not come round. Sunday 17 I got a bath and a rub with sulphur, the doctor did not come round. Monday 18 The doctor came round & sent five of us out, I got back to No2 hut & into the same bed. Tuesday 19 I went to the doctor and got classed B.6. again. I have to get medicine, massage, & education. Wednesday 20 I was one of the lhut orderlies. I got a chit to-night to report to the Major Baigent in the morning. Thursday 21 I paraded to the doctor this morning he marked me B.3. to go home by transport, all the North Island men have to stand by and await orders. The South Island men have gone on 6 days leave. Friday 22 I did not do anything, other North Islanders who went to the doctor this morning are getting ready to go on leave tomorrow. Saturday 23 Some more North Island men who went to the Dr this morning left on leave this evening. Sunday 24 We had church parade this morning. I went to the Free Church service in the W.C.A. building. We got chits tonight to report to Medical office A in the morning. Monday 25 We were examined at Medical office A & marked for 14 days leave to report back to Codford. I went for a walk tonight to Bramford. Tuesday 26 We had to Parade this morning for our pay books & passes, then pay, then our ration books, railway warrants & I caught the 4-17 train. Wednesday 27 Davidson & I went right on to Euston by tube. Davidson left by the 4-30 & I left by the 10-30 for Edinburgh, arrived here about 8 this morning. Thursday 28 I went to a party last night at Nurse Ross' home. I wrote a note to Mary yesterday & got an answer this afternoon. I met her to-night at the office, we went for a walk. Friday 29 I joined a party from here and had a look through several historic buildings & at the site of others, it was very interesting. Saturday 30 I went to see the Sec of the Y.M.C.A. re trips, he took me for a cup of tea, and gave me a ticket for a concert at Leith, which was very good. December 1918 Sunday 1 It was a quiet day. I did not go far, I went up with Mary to call on her friend we afterwards went for a walk along the Dean River. Monday 2 I went to try to get seats in the Lyceum Theatre. I got two for Friday night. Tuesday 3 I went for a walk out to Murrayfield, & came back by car. Wednesday 4 I was to have gone out to see the fleet, but missed the party. I went for a walk along Queensferry Road. Thursday 5 I was strolling round most of the day. Friday 6 I walked down to Portobello & Joppa and came back by car. Mary & I went to see the Gondoliers at the Lyceum tonight. Saturday 7 I was strolling around most of the day. Mary & I were up on Calton hill tonight. Sunday 8 I went for a walk round most of the day. Mary was working in the G.P.U., met her in Hanover St. tonight. Monday 9 I was having a look around the Royal Scottish Museum most of the day. Tuesday 10 There has been a thick fog all day. I am leaving by the 9-30 train tonight, for London. Wednesday 11 I got to London from Edinburgh this morning & went on to Euston had breakfast went to Paddington station took kit from Euston, we got to Codford No 9 camp. Thursday 12 We had to parade to a dental & medical parade, I got a T.A.B. inoculation, was excused from parade this afternoon. Friday 13 All who were inoculated yesterday were excused from duties, most of the rest got fatigues of some kind about camp, we had a lecture by Gen. Richardson this afternoon. Saturday 14 This morning we were sent over to the demobolization camp, to help fill the South Island boat. Sunday 15 We had a church parade this morning, then we were finished. Monday 16 We had no parade, we were told to hang around the hut in case we were wanted. Tuesday 17 We were around the hut all day, but did no parades. Wednesday 18 Some of us were a firing party at a guneral, the rest went on a route march this morning & marched to a football match this afternoon. Thursday 19 We went on parade, I went for a short route march, went to N.I. No.13 camp this afternoon. Friday 20 We went for a short route march then got ready to go on leave, we left camp between 2 & 3. Bade & I got the train for Edinburgh at 9-45 at King's Cross. Saturday 21 We arrived in Edinburgh about 7 this morning. I went to the Hope St. P.U. saw Mary, met her & Miss Martin tonight, we went to the pictures. Sunday 22 Mary was working in the G.P.U. I met her tonight, went to her room for a while. Monday 23 While out for a walk this afternoon I met Dan & Donald McLean, we had tea together, after I met Mary & Nellie we went to the carnibal(sic) in Waverley market. Tuesday 24 I met Arthur Davis, we went to Rae's home for lunch had a look through the Botanical gardens. Mary, Nellie & I went to the Albert hall tonight it was good. Wednesday 25 We had a good dinner at Ramsay Lodge free, & were each given a souvenier & present by the management. Thursday 26 Arthur Davis & I went down & had a look through the Mystery ship at Marton & the two U boats at Leith. Friday 27 I was to have met Arthur this morning but did not see him. Mary, Nellie & I went to see the Boys of the Village at the Empire Theatre. Saturday 28 I went to see Arthur at Rae's house tonight had tea there, afterwards Mary & I went to the pictures. Sunday 29 I met Arthur this afternoon & made it right to go to Dundee to-morrow. Monday 30 Arthur & I went to Dundee but the weather was not good, we came back earlier than we intended, I stayed inside all the evening. Tuesday 31 I did not do much today. Mary & I went to the West End Theatre. Nellie went with another friend. Burn's Merry Muses. The feamale Arithmetician who multiplies by subtraction May we have in our arms whom we love in our hearts. Here's of it & to it & them that can do it. The feamale surgeon that extracts the marrow without hurting the bone. January 1919 1st I met Mary & Nellie at 2. We went to a Variety entertainment, had tea & went to see Puss in boots Pantomine. 2nd Mary was in the G.P.U. I did not see her at all tonight. ...............................................................................
