Description |
A black and white study of a Begonia on single weight paper, originally displayed in a montage of three photographs. The cardboard backing and green paper front have been discarded because of dirt. A note on the discarded front, written in a different hand to others found recently, read: "Begonia on display table". A coloured photograph of Taylors White Giant Pendula Begonia can be found on the internet [see dobbies.co.uk].
Although there was nothing written on the back of this photograph as there was on all the others found on the Museum workroom research shelves on 25 August 2009 by Jenny Pierson, in one of her lists, Museum volunteer, Nancy Farnell, wrote, "4 flower prints on single weight paper ex Mr. Chinn, early photographer. Book 1 page 21". This photograph is most likely one of those and is a proved copy of a Chinn photograph (see catalogue record 0000.900.0781).
In 1906: "Mr. Chinn is a member of the Marlborough Agricultural and Pastoral Association, takes a keen interest in horticultural matters, and has some fine conservatories and gardens at his private residence in Grove Road." [Source: Cyclopedia of New Zealand Volume 5, 1906, p341]
