Label for the Albatross Muff :
William Ross Brownlee (1828 -1917) was a pioneer sawmiller of Marlborough. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1863 at the age of 35 with his wife and family of five children in the ship Abouker. They arrived at Port Chalmers and William Brownlee began sawmilling at Mahakipawa in 1864.

During the family's voyage an albatross died on the deck of the ship after being caught in the rigging during a storm. The feathers were later used to make the muff on display here (the muff was made in Wellington).
