A black and white photograph showing a new settler home and an unmetalled road in the new township of Ward about 1907. The photograph has written on the front bottom, 'A first settler's home and farm buildings. Note the unmetalled road."
Information as typed by Norm Brayshaw: "Earl[y] settlers homes and farm buildings. When the area was subdivided new buildings had to be erected for each block to contain their new owners and roads made, note the telegraph pole in the photo[graph]."
A typed paper copy of the Hale caption is included in the photograph packet.

A scan of this photograph will be used in the Changing European History Gallery 2 display in commemoration of the Marlborough Provincial 150th anniversary on 1 November 2009. ................................................................................................................................................................................Caption 87 After 1900, the Government bought up 18,000 ha, (45,000 acres) from Flaxbourne Station. This was subdivided into 80 farms in the great 1905 sale. Ward township dates from this influx of settlers. Most of the new farmers still had to fence their properties, and build homes, before buying stock. Here we see a pioneer homestead, complete with woolshed, and stables, in a landscape without trees. 2009.067.0062
