Collection Marlborough Province - down the decades from early days
Photographer Brayshaw, Norman Henry
Description A black and white photograph showing a number of men wading in the water and a boat load of men coming into shore, plus a lady with two children standing on the beach. It is a very rocky coast line.

Information as typed by Norm Brayshaw: "Wool being loaded on to a small vessel off the mo[u]th of the Flaxbourne River. This was often very cold and wet and a rum ration was issued at the end of a days work."

Copied by Norm Brayshaw in 1964 from a photograph supplied by H.H. Vavasour, Ugbrook, Seddon. Includes a negative.

There is another copy photograph of the same scene but with the boat loaded with wool in the same packet (see catalogue record 0000.900.0772).

A scan of this photograph will be used in the Changing European History Gallery 2 display in commemoration of the Marlborough Provincial 150th anniversary on 1 November 2009.

Quite an occasion but a serious one, this pre-1900 shore scene shows how bales of Flaxbourne wool were rowed out from the Ward Beach, to a waiting coaster out of the picture. The boat is returning for another load, and the station hands are about to steady it. The hands backed a wool wagon into the sea, and carefully loaded each bale into the boat. The task is successful, thanks to near calm conditions. Both Flaxbourne, and Kekerengu, benefited from some protection given by the rocks on the coast, against threatening waves, while this operation was carried out.
