Description |
A black and white "Real Photo Post Card (copyright)" showing seven berthed boats on the Opawa River. On the front is written, "Opawa River, Blenheim, N.Z. F.G.R. Tanner Bros. 1009."
On the back of the photograph is, "Mrs. L. Fearn (nee Chant), 4 Elzy St[reet], Blenheim. In a different hand, "Fishing Fleet", and what looks like, "Waitarce". Something once stuck on the back of the photograph has been peeled off disfiguring some of the writing.
There is a negative in the same packet, but no copy.
A scan of this photograph will be used in the Changing European History Gallery 2 display in commemoration of the Marlborough Provincial 150th anniversary on 1 November 2009. ................................................................................................................................................................................ Caption 69 Blenheim's fishing fleet on the Opawa River upstream from the confluence with the Omaka (Taylor) River. This was taken in the early 1900s. The four, or five, well-maintained fishing boats worked the fishing areas of Cloudy, and Clifford Bays, and also throughout Cook Strait. The identity of the three distant craft is unknown. During a river flood, boats, such as these, were at risk from floating logs. 1984.027.0002. ............................................................................................................................................................................. Recorded by Kevin Andrews and Derek Cordes in the MHS acquisitions book 1983-1986. Most items were probably put in the Main Store in Beavertown (Jenny Pierson, 27/12/2012).
