Description Black and white mounted photograph of a small launch, the Kotipo, on the Opawa River.

Written on the back of the photograph in an unknown hand, possibly V.A. Logan's, is, "Marlborough Historical Society. Presented by E.B. Paine 3/2/1957. Mr. Frank Paines launch Kotipo on the Opawa River."

Photograph is stamped with A.M. Hale Collection, which is not correct. This photograph would have been in Norm Brayshaw's Howick Road archives and arrived at MHS that way.

This photograph has been copied, there is a negative in the packet with it.

A scan of this photograph will be used in the Changing European History Gallery 2 display in commemoration of the Marlborough Provincial 150th anniversary on 1 November 2009.

Mr Frank Paine's launch, Kotipo quietly sidles along the tranquil Opawa River. Pleasure boating after 1900, was popular, and unhurried. Folk tended to dress in finery for the occasion, and include a picnic on the way. Craft, such as the Kotipo, had a very narrow beam, and could rock alarmingly. Early single cylinder engines could reach considerable speed. 1957.030.0001
