Description A black and white photograph showing two men felling a large rimu tree in the Pelorus-Rai Valley bush area.

Information as typed by Norm Brayshaw: "Pelorus-Rai Valley. Mr. Alquist (Right hand side) and mate at work felling a large rimu in the bush."

Copied by Norm Brayshaw in 1964 from a photograph supplied by Mrs. Cozens, Old Renwick Road, Blenheim. Includes a negative.

A scan of this photograph will be used in the Changing European History Gallery 2 display in commemoration of the Marlborough Provincial 150th anniversary on 1 November 2009.

This pre-1900 photograph demonstrates the massive job ahead for any two-man team felling native trees. This specimen is a Rai Valley rimu. Mr Alquist, at right, and his mate, seem to be cutting the scarf prior to using the two-man cross-cut saw shown. Thousands of massive trees fell to the axe, and saw in the Pelorus Valley catchment. 2009.067.0044
