Looking across the wharf and mill at Blackball, 24/06/1908. The pigeon house is on the left. There are two ships, Falcon? and Eunice, tied up at the wharf.
Written on the front of the photograph is, "No. 7. Brownlee's Mill. Pelorus. Protected 24.6.08. R. Spittal photo."

The busy heart of William Brownlee's timber empire. The port of Blackball was on a distributary of the Pelorus River, less than two km from Havelock. It boasted a large sawmill, acted as the downstream terminus to the Pelorus railway, and had ample wharf space. In this early 1900s scene, we see the open-ended mill in the centre left, behind the berthed timber ships. The boiler house chimney is just behind. All wharf areas are taken up with cut timber ready for export. 2008.165.0080
