An early 1900s Brownlee log train, in the Pelorus Valley. The first road to Nelson can be seen - winding, and narrow. The railway appears to be a better enterprise. The 3'6" (1067 mm) gauge, met the N.Z. Railway's line specifications ready for their eventual takeover. The sleepers, and ballast, look permanent. It is a "railway" rather than a makeshift "tramway". The little engine is hauling a heavy load. There were occasional mishaps - a locomotive collapsed through a bridge, and one once ran off the wharf, and into the sea at Blackball. 2008.165.0043
