................................................................................................................................................................................Caption 47
The 93 ton, topsail schooner Ronga, part of Brownlee's timber fleet. Built in 1900, she suffered more than one capsize, and eventually was converted into a steamer, and re-named Wairau. The Blackball mill maintained a pigeon loft. Departing vessels always took one, or two birds, and released them when returning to Pelorus Sound. This alerted the mill, which would send out the tug Pelorus, to tow the ship into port against an outgoing tide, or sometimes against a flooded Pelorus River. 2008.165.0094
