Description |
A black and white mounted photograph showing Greensill & Co. General Store - Gold bought, with people standing outside.
The photograph has been outlined in red ink on the mount and in light blue ink on the mount is written, "Greensil & co. Store. Cullensville 1898. James Fuller (Manager)."
On the back the photograph is stamped, "A.M. Hale Collection", but this incorrect. This photograph almost certainly belongs in this Fuller collection (rather than the undescribed Cullensville photographs in the Dobson collection 1993.116), as it has "Cullensville 1898 James Fuller - Store Mgnr" written on the back in Innes Simonsen's handwriting. Simonsen stopped being MHS secretary in 1960 when Brayshaw took over.
A scan of this photograph is to be used in the Changing European History Gallery 2 display in commemoration of the Marlborough Provincial 150th anniversary on 1 November 2009. ................................................................................................................................................................................ Caption 41 Greensill & Co's store at Cullensville, 1898. James Fuller has been put in as manager. The next year he departed for the brand new town of Seddon, and opened a large store there. It has often been said that only a few miners ever did well from gold mining, but the suppliers made good money. Typically clad in adaptable corrugated iron, it boasts a fine wooden façade. 1958.007.0003
