Caption 40 At the Grove wharf, near the head of Queen Charlotte Sound, 1891. During the gold rushes of the 1860s, and 1880s, many prospective miners from overseas landed in Picton, and then came by small boat to the Grove. From there, they walked the cart road, and the tracks, leading to the Mahakipawa Goldfield in the Linkwater area. Some carried on past Havelock, to the Wakamarina Goldfield. Here, we see the Torea at the two-year old wharf, and the Phoenix, just offshore. Mr Rickertson is on the horse, at extreme right. 2009.067.0035
