Description |
A black and white photograph of the Grove-Mahakipawa-Havelock mail coach at Cullensville.
Information as typed by Norm Brayshaw: "The Grove-Mahakipawa-Havelock mail coach taken at Cullensville. This was probably James Patrick Campbell's coach and [it] is outside Mr. And Mrs. Harry Edmonds residence 'Ivy Cottage'."
Copied by Norm Brayshaw in 1961 from a photograph held by Mr. G. Wilson, Mahakipawa. Includes a negative.
A scan of this photograph is to be used in the Changing European History Gallery 2 display in commemoration of the Marlborough Provincial 150th anniversary on 1 November 2009. ............................................................................................................................................................................... Caption 39 The Grove-Mahakipawa-Havelock mail coach paused at Cullensville. This is in the late 1890s, and the driver is thought to be James Patrick Campbell. He has stopped just outside Harry Edmond's residence - Ivy Cottage. Notice the let-down canvas for wet weather protection covering the sides of the coach. Although Campbell doesn't appear to have many passengers, or much of a load, there would have been times when he was glad of his five horses, especially when carrying machinery, and food orders, when traversing the steep, winding hill road from Havelock, complete with Winter ruts, and dust in Summer. 2009.067.0034
