A down-valley view of Cullensville, about 1892. The rush to Cullens Creek, and the Mahakipawa Goldfield got under way in 1888. Cullensville is a bustling place spread lengthwise along its single access street. The two-storey Miners' Arms Hotel appears in the centre, and the Grand National Hotel is the other double-storey building, right of centre. Young's A1 Bakery proudly carries its name on its roof top. There is also a church.

Tunnelling reached down to the one-time stream bed. Wooden fluming on both sides of the valley carried water to power pumps, which dealt with the on-going seepage from the main stream, down into the man-made tunnels. The former bush has largely gone, due to felling, and fires.
