| Black and white mounted photograph shows the Miners' Arms Hotel at Cullensville with people posed in the foreground, plus a man with a very large bottle. 1 of 2 pictures [no subject given] - from the Cawte family home at Mahakipawa. John Cawte was buried on 25 November 1887 at Picton aged 74 years. He had been the first Picton gaol governor. 15 June 2009 (Jenny Pierson): I believe one of these pictures is this photograph found in Archives by Lloyd Kerr. On the back of this photograph, written in an unknown had is, "Cullensville", followed by this in Innes Simonsen's hand, "From Cawte family. MHS (I.R. Simonsen)." Brayshaw has taken copies of the photograph, the whereabouts of these copies is unknown, but a close-up of the people has the Brayshaw number 3081 and the full view, as this is, has the number 3112. This photograph is also stamped with, A.M. Hale Collection, but that is not correct. On the front of the photograph written in an unknown hand, "Miners Arms" and something else unable to be read because of a scar. The photographer similarly can't be read, nor what Simonsen has written in the right bottom corner, apart from, "Farm Products". A scan of this photograph is to be used in the Changing European History Gallery 2 display in commemoration of the Marlborough Provincial 150th anniversary on 1 November 2009. ............................................................................................................................................................................. Caption 35 The Miners' Arms Hotel. The Law family is seen here with Thomas Law, holding a man-size whisky bottle. Thomas Law leased the Hotel from William Darvil. Darvil bought it in 1893, from Mrs E. Dickson, with earnings he made from gold obtained from the nearby Hibernian Gold Claim. Mrs Elizabeth Dickson established the first accommodation house in Cullensville. It was just a rough cottage at first. The establishment grew in stages until it was licensed in October 1888, as The Miners' Arms Hotel. At this stage the township comprised four wooden buildings and about 200 tents. This hotel was completely destroyed by fire on 25 January 1896. 1958.005.0009 |
