A scan of this photograph is to be used in the Changing European History Gallery 2 display in commemoration of the Marlborough Provincial 150th anniversary on 1 November 2009. ................................................................................................................................................................................Caption 34 Dave Black cereal harvesting at Meadowbank in the early 1900s. His machine is a side-delivery reaper and binder drawn by three, lighter, part-draught horses. From a roll of flax fibre twine, each sheaf was bound with the help of a patent knotter. Machines of this kind quickly caught on, and totally supplanted the former use of scythes and sickles. Introduced in numbers from the late 1860s, they were so much faster and reduced the pressure to get enough farm hands, especially if there was a race on to beat approaching foul weather. On the other hand, the new machines broke down readily, and regularly. When this happened the local blacksmiths provided assistance. 1998.086.0011
