Cereal harvesting on Ken Marfell's Seaview Downs property near Seddon. The sheaves of oats or perhaps wheat, have been stooked to allow further ripening and easier drying in the event of unwelcome rain. A horse-drawn reaper and binder has cut the crop, and made a tie round the middle of each sheaf. The sheaves from each stook are pitch-forked on to the wagon, and then on to a circular stack. Seaview's downs may be clean, easy rolling country, but they lack shelter, and are subject to warm nor'westers, or cold winds from the south, and off the sea. Tough conditions for livestock, as well as crops. 1997.120.0002
