Marlborough Province - down the decades from early days |
Description |
A sepia mounted photograph showing flood water surrounding the business area opposite the Blenheim Post Office in Market Square (or Place), said to be about 1889 but more likely to be early 1900s, There are horse drawn vehicles and people in a rowing boat. The rowing boat has a sail.
On the back of the photograph written in Allen Hale's hand is, "A good old Blenheim flood. Received from Miss Vida Harding 1/8/62 [1 August 1962]. Jim Draper seated on the white horse. Fred Birch (wood turner) standing up in boat. Note his hat and swallow tail coat."
In the same packet are two postcards made of this picture (see Archives catalogue records 0000.500.0082 and 0000.500.0083).
A scan of this photograph is to be used in the Changing European History Gallery 2 display in commemoration of the Marlborough Provincial 150th anniversary on 1 November 2009. ............................................................................................................................ Caption 26 A Blenheim flood, thought to be in 1889 [more likely early 1900s], this view in Market Place looks directly South. The Post Office stands out on the right. The floodwaters seem a little bit deeper than usual, and thigh gumboots are in evidence. Generally, the public began to show up once the flood peak had been passed, and the risk was nearly over. At the centre right, mounted on the white horse, we see Mr Jim Draper. In the boat with arms akimbo, stands local wood turner, Mr Fred Birch. 2009.067.0028
