Description
A black and white photograph giving a view of early Blenheim whilst in flood. Written at the bottom of the photograph is, "Market Street Blenheim, in flood, 1865 (from Macey's Studio towards the Church of Nativity). Clearly visible in this photograph is the fold made when a copy has been made omitting the writing on the bottom. Information as typed by Norm Brayshaw: "Market street, Blenheim, 1865". Copied by Norm Brayshaw in 1960 from a booklet of the town. Includes a negative. A scan of this photograph is to be used in the Changing European History Gallery 2 display in commemoration of the Marlborough Provincial 150th anniversary on 1 November 2009. There is another photograph in the packet which shows the same view but with the wording cut off. ............................................................................................................................................................................... Caption 23 One of Blenheim's early serious floods, 1865. This photograph was taken by professional photographer, William Macey, from his shop in Market Place. This was at a site where the current Farmers shop joins on to the Centre Point businesses. It is believed to be one of the earliest photographs of Blenheim. The view looks due North-West across what became Seymour Square, to the Church of Nativity in the distance. Few buildings had been built, and those in the foreground appear somewhat temporary. The timber came from the Grovetown Bush. The water may be only half a metre in depth, but regular flooding became a fact of Marlborough life. 2009.067.0011
