Description |
A black and white photograph showing a group of railway men around a train at the old Picton railway station. Information as typed by Norm Brayshaw: "The Picton railway in 1902. The line curved eastwards to the present foreshore and led on to the wharf which was out from The Memorial on the present foreshore. The platform of the old station now forms a terrace to the east of the Memorial."
Copied by Norm Brayshaw in 1960 from a photograph held by A.M. Hale, Blenheim. Original owner [lives] outside Blenheim. Includes a negative.
A scan of this photograph is to be used in the Changing European History Gallery 2 display in commemoration of the Marlborough Provincial 150th anniversary on 1 November 2009.
There is a smaller, clearer, 7 inches by 4.5 inches copy in the same packet. It's left hand corner has been cut off and replaced with a piece of paper which has been cellotaped on. ................................................................................................................................................................................ Caption 17 Outside Picton's Station, in 1902. At this time the rail line curved eastwards along the present foreshore, and led out on to the overseas wharf, projecting seawards from the end of Wellington Street. The station sat below London Quay, just east of today's War Memorial Arch. This G-class, saddle tank locomotive is seen with an unnamed group of workers. We can identify the NZ Railway's uniforms worn by the Engine Driver, Fireman, Guard, Station Master, Porters and Gangers, among others. The old style raised roof on the double carriage gave more head space, ventilation, and light. 2009.067.0017
