A black and white photograph showing a group of railway men around one of the first trains to run between Picton and Blenheim - stopping on the Picton side of the Opawa River because there was no station at Blenheim. The photograph was taken at the Picton Railway Station (see catalogue record 2009.067.0019 for building comparison. Although the name is missing, the background hill profile is the same).
Information as typed by Norm Brayshaw: "One of the first trains from Picton to Opawa River, from there passengers went by ferry to Beaver Town, now called Blenheim (from the back of the photograph taken 1880). Left to right: Jack Peek junior; White, station master, on platform; William Aubry; Evan Rackley; J.T. Williams; Brown, sitting on engine; Matt Allan, engine driver, sitting on engine; Nicholas Harms; Jack Reynolds junior; Jack Reynolds senior; Harry Langman; unknown; Hunter, fireman; Walter Randall; unknown; J.W. Peek [senior], guard."
Copied by Norm Brayshaw in 1960 from a photograph held by T.J. Williams, Picton (Charters). Includes a negative.
A scan of this photograph is to be used in the Changing European History Gallery 2 display in commemoration of the Marlborough Provincial 150th anniversary on 1 November 2009.

Group scene at Picton's first railway station, featuring an early train connecting through to the Opawa River, 1880. Work on the line had begun in 1872, connecting with the Opawa (Blenheim) Station three years later. From the Opawa station, passengers for Blenheim were ferried over the Opawa River to Grove Road. A rail bridge over the river, and a station in Blenheim were not built for sometime. The C-class engine was one of the first two in the Province.
