Picture is yellow and dark brown. In the bottom right corner is: "W. Leslie". Photograph is mounted on white cardboard which has, "Macey. Blenheim" stencilled on the back, but it is not a Macey photograph.

Written on the back in a different unknown hand, "At Cullensville".

Written on the back in W. Pickering's hand, "Cullensville, Havelock. At time of 1st [first] gold rush. 27/11/99 [27 November 1899]. Return to W. Pickering, Havelock.

This sketch shows Cullensville, near Linkwater, about 1890. The camps were always a shambles at first. This picture shows an unplanned canvas tent town. The trees in the way will soon fall victim to cooking fires, and supply green planks for huts. The marquee could well be a tavern, or dining saloon. Just above it, a cottage, and perhaps a shop, or two may be detected. The track that the people are on will soon become a wagon road. Perhaps the post and rail fence indicates a horse paddock. The notice nailed to the tree might well be a mining regulation, or a tavern advertisement. 2009.067.0012
