A scan of this photograph is to be used in the Changing European History Gallery 2 display in commemoration of the Marlborough Provincial 150th anniversary on 1 November 2009. ................................................................................................................................................................................ Caption 12 Nelson and Mayo's high pressure sluicing claim in the Wakamarina, at Darkie's Terrace, in 1911. Sluicing on this scale frequently caused major scars of devastation in the goldfields. The man at left swings the monitor's fierce jet to and fro to smash down the terrace, otherwise the jet would merely bore a useless hole. There is frightful pressure, reach and noise from this giant jet, the scale of its power demonstrated by the men silhouetted at right. 2009.067.0014
