Caption 12
Nelson and Mayo's high pressure sluicing claim in the Wakamarina, at Darkie's Terrace, in 1911. Sluicing on this scale frequently caused major scars of devastation in the goldfields. The man at left swings the monitor's fierce jet to and fro to smash down the terrace, otherwise the jet would merely bore a useless hole. There is frightful pressure, reach and noise from this giant jet, the scale of its power demonstrated by the men silhouetted at right. 2009.067.0014
