Description
One mounted black and white photograph of goldmine pumping gear in the Wakamarina Gorge. On the front is: "Pumping Gear, Wakamarina Gorge, Tyree Photo 1340." Written in Norm Brayshaw's hand on the front at the top on the matt is: "From Mr. A.G. Reader, Blenheim 1960," also it is stamped: Marlborough Historical Society. Photograph has Tyree, Trafalgar Street, Nelson, New Zealand, stencilled on the back. It also has the number 3009 stamped on the back. This is a Norm Brayshaw photograph number. Lloyd Kerr has written in pencil on the back: "River & Dredge claims - Waka." On the back it is stamped A.M. Hale Collection - but it is not part of the Hale collection [those that did this stamping just stamped everything they came across regardless of whether it belonged in the Hale collection or not]. A scan of this photograph is to be used in the Changing European History Gallery 2 display in commemoration of the Marlborough Provincial 150th anniversary on 1 November 2009. ................................................................................................................................................................................ Caption 9 Pumping gear at the Wakamarina Gorge Gold Mining Company's claim at Deep Creek. The company turned the river from this gorge into a 100 m diversion channel, and then attempted to pump water from the gorge to extract gold from crevices in the river bed. Floods proved the major problem, returns were dismal. Success also eluded later claim owners. It was worked at different times between 1882 and 1899. As well as the catwalks in the photograph, we can also see the 14 horse power steam pump. 1960.019.0003
