Description
|
A black and white photograph of a mud hut with a central doorway, two windows and a thatched roof. Two men are posed either side of the open doorway and a early automobile (Possibly a Ford model T) is parked by the cottage on the left-hand side.
Information as typed by Norm Brayshaw: "An old mud whare on Hillersden used for sleeping quarters. This would be in the late 1880s-1890s." Someone else has written in pencil: "More likely about 1910." But I [Jenny Pierson] think Norm is meaning the whare was used for sleeping quarters about 1880s-1890s, the photograph itself may well have been taken in 1910.
Copied by Norm Brayshaw in 1962 from a photograph held by C.D. Broadbridge, Wairau Valley. Includes a negative.
A scan of this photograph is to be used in the Changing European History Gallery 2 display in commemoration of the Marlborough Provincial 150th anniversary on 1 November 2009.
An 8.5" x 4.5" copy of the photograph is in the same packet.

Hillersden Station's old mud whare, used for decades as workers' sleeping quarters. The thatched roof, and layered mud brick walls give it a cosy look. The walls show signs of wear, and damp is rapidly under-cutting them at ground level. The old timers may be swapping tales of mustering days, or of A.G. Jenkins, the first owner back in 1850, who once employed up to 200 men on the station. This photograph was taken in 1910. 2009.067.0005.
