| A black and white mounted photograph of a large, mainly wooden homestead with a brick chimney at the left-hand end and a cob portion on the right-hand end. A man in a dark suit stands in front of the house with his three dogs. Written on the back in Allen Hale's handwriting: "Old Meadowbank Homestead. The original section of [on] the right is made of mud. Mr. G.B. Richardson added the other two sections." Written in another hand: "As at July 1988 there is still a section of mud wall still existing behind the Ben Morven Homestead." Stamped with A.M. Hale Collection. A scan of this photograph is to be used in the Changing European History Gallery 2 display in commemoration of the Marlborough Provincial 150th anniversary on 1 November 2009. ................................................................................................................................................................................Caption 2 Meadowbank Station was one of the 20, or more, sheep runs taken up in the Wairau Valley, by 1850. John and William Oldham first occupied the property. Just when this rather rambling homestead was built is not known. The original part, at the right, is made of mud. Two extensions followed. The site of this house is nowhere near today's Taylor Valley property, but behind the present Ben Morven homestead. 2009.067.0007 |
